Intrapreneurs – Innovators from within


If you do more than you are paid to do, you will soon start earning more for what you do. Businesses are looking for intrapreneurs, individuals who act like entrepreneurs within their organization. More and more businesses are looking for innovators within, people willing and able to cause changes. To make radical leaps you have to change your mindset, take on more than you are required to and you must possess dogged persistence.

For every forward thinking organization, an intrapreneur is an asset and for the job seeker being entrepreneurial puts you ahead of other job seekers. As an individual you do not just want to grow within an organization you want to grow within an industry. While some organizations can be stifling, one must be committed to personal as well as organizational growth.

Let’s look at the Intrapreneur and what they do.

The Intrapreneur and Risk

As an intrapreneur you are a different employee, you must be willing to take risks and be responsible. Intrapreneurs do not mind performance based pay packages, you must be willing to put your money where your mouth is. You are simply saying if I do not produce do not pay me. While most will rather have a fixed salary they are more daring, they believe in venturing. They take responsibility for decisions, they accept the failure and successes. You must however be calculative in taking risk bearing in mind it’s about managing risk for no venture is risk free.

The Intrapreneur and new markets

It does not matter the department within the organization you belong to, you are always looking into growth markets and segments. The entrepreneur is usually the one bothered with this responsibility not employees, but intrapreneurs understand that if the organization does not grow, they cannot grow. They are constantly looking for new ways to better and expand the business. Remember your goal is to grow within the industry not just within a specific organization.

The Intrapreneur works on the business not in the business.

The bottom line is the intrapreneurs concern.Sometimes employees are more absorbed in their pay packages and are not interested in the business bottom line. The intrapreneur thinks on the cost of capital, return on investment, value innovation, the business model, financial goals and plans. In established organizations these are functions left to the owners and top management but intrapreneurs are always underpaid yet they over deliver.

The intrapreneur and change

For the intrapreneur, change is the only constant thing. One of the advantages of smaller organizations is that they are more responsive to change. If you work within a large organization, this might be difficult, but with such organizations looking to be agile, the business unit structure within them are changing. They are looking for individuals who are willing to adopt and implement change.

The Intrapreneur and Marketing

You are a marketer whether that is your job role or not. Intrapreneurs are cross functional in their roles. They do specifics but are equally generalists. You must seek new ways to make your company visible. Owners do not jeopardize the chances of the company neither should intrapreneurs. You work for the good of the company while working for your own good.

The Intrapreneur and leadership.

The intrapreneur is internally governed, they create the future and environment they want to see, and they create trails. They grow their influence both within and outside the organization.

It’s my belief that everyone must go entrepreneurial, you should innovate within the organization you work for or are planning to work for. Intrapreneurs are more likely to succeed as entrepreneurs. The person that benefits most from you changing is you.

Do more for less, do more than you are paid to do, under promise and over deliver, be the extra mile employee, go on when others stop and decide to excel no matter what. Help someone else fulfil their dream and someone will help you in return.
