Qualification vs Competence – The dilemma of a failed Educational system

The workplace gateway has long been guarded by believers in institutional learning, people who made job entry requirement the qualification from a formal institution of learning. The dilemma in some parts of the world is that qualification does not translate to competence and as history has shown we have seen people outside the formal educational system do some mind boggling things which has caused some to question the system and others to believe their success lies in not being conformists.

With more believers in the formal systems of learning, this is a major requirement for a job seeker looking to enter established organizations and is also a means of screening candidates used by recruiters. While we cannot take away the fact that an individual who has been exposed to an organized body of knowledge within a formal educational system and has excelled in it has a lot to offer, with this chosen selection process we run a great risk of loosing some of the greatest minds.

With the digital age, we are seeing great changes as organizations are beginning to realize the wealth of intelligent and competent individuals in the hitherto neglected batch segment who are non-conformist, self-paced learners, self-educated and practice informal learning. We are seeing an increase in self-paced learning programs, competence based recruitment and most importantly platforms where competence reigns over qualification.

There is a new order, an order where you qualify because you are competent.

What has changed for the recruiter and the Job seeker?

The cheese has moved, recruiters are looking for performers, executors and trail blazers. No recruiter goes seeking for average hence they are willing to expand their search segment. The good news for the job seeker is the world has changed, the digital age ushered in a new set of organizations, some of which have rendered the traditional ones which did not evolve extinct. Even better is the fact that they did it without permission from the industry greats, the populace did the choosing. Sampling market segments, populist opinion is now easier, for some industries barriers to entry are down, boundaries of operations have been expanded to be anywhere with an internet connection.

In essence, learning has changed. We are seeing the rise in MOOCS – massive open online courses, SOLE – self organized learning environments, where individuals are learning from world class institutions from anywhere in the world and can do it self-paced. For the job seeker or entrepreneur there is no excuse for incompetence, the smart phone is now your gateway to a world of knowledge.

The entry requirement to sit at the table of greats has changed. The world now seeks the competent, one adequate for the purpose over the qualified. Performers impress, not the qualified!

Be a life grinder not a goal grinder. You know how you did all just to make it through school? Well now you have to do all to make it through life. It’s now about turning your learning into life skills. If you learnt about business, are you good for business?

There is an empty seat in every industry open for the one willing to pay the price for excellence, innovation and the extraordinary. Are you going to take it?

These days, one no longer shows up for an interview with a Resume only, you show up with a product or video or documentation of you providing service, demonstrating your ability to deliver.

The only person shutting you out of your dream job is you. If the organizations out there won’t have you in their employ, are you hungry enough for your desired future?

Facebook turned down co-founder of WhatsApp Brian Acton in 2009 only to buy WhatsApp years later for a jaw dropping $19 billion dollars. Alibaba founder Jack Ma was turned down from 30 jobs including KFC before becoming china’s richest man.

There is no need for a co-signing on your dreams, like Eric Thomas will say its average skill phenomenal will. Be competent!
