We are in an information economy, a dispensation of millennials and digital natives. A dispensation where ignorance should not be excused as knowledge is only a click away. Every dispensation through history is driven by a new technology as well as an improved medium of broadcast. As the industrial age got on the way we also saw major advancement in print media which told and spread the story of major developments in the various sectors from agriculture, manufacturing, energy, health care, construction and the list goes on. Every age and dispensation throws up a new set of billionaires, hence a look at the top ten richest men in the world now indicates that wealth is now more digital than ever. Prior to the 1970’s owners of land, real estate or farms were the billionaires with businesses revolving around agriculture, oil and manufacturing.
As we have come into the age of big data we are seeing owners of companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, Facebook, Google leading the billion dollar men pack, a pointer to where the money now is. If money is a reward for solving problems and the kind of problems you are solving determine the kind of money you will be making, the greatest error of any job seeker or entrepreneur in this dispensation is not to understand the language the world now speaks.
If you are so limited in your understanding of the information age and the greatest benefit you have made from it has been connecting with your old lost childhood friends via Facebook then you are worse that a man using a stone headed axe during the industrial revolution.
The problems we now face as nations, countries and people have changed, hence the people we need to solve our problems have equally changed. The skill sets individuals and companies are looking for are different.
At this time we are seeing the boundaries to nations, trade and investment and business patronage fall. The corner shop in Bombay can have a customer in Boston USA, the point is how and where you sell yourself, your skills and competency have equally changed.
My Advice to the Job Seeker!
Google is your new resume, if you have a skill or have developed competence and expertise in a particular field can people google it? Write a blog, do a YouTube video, keep a Facebook page, capture your events on Instagram or regularly tweet about it. Give you competence expression. If you cannot be found online with as simple as a LinkedIn or Xing profile or any other professional networking site that outlines your qualification and competence, I am afraid you do not speak the language of this dispensation.
You are the man on social media, be responsible. We live in an age where people hide behind the computer to say and do all sorts, unaware that the 21st century Employers first point of call to search for your person is google. Back in the day you needed to do background checks but why go through the hassle when you have a computer.
Marketing is visibility. If you are looking, position yourself to be found. No one will see your resume saved on your computer, no one will hire you if they do not know what you do. The world has moved from qualification based recruitment to competency based recruitment. It’s no longer just about what you studied but what you can do, has the knowledge you acquired translated to skills?
Practice selective volunteerism, be your own PR manager. Perception they say is stronger than reality, act like it until you become like it. In your chosen field, let everything about you present online have a connect to your passion, skill, expertise or competence.
Freelance – while waiting for your big break make the internet your chosen market segment. Offer your services, do it for free if you have to.
Make every moment count. You are constantly being evaluated, never miss an opportunity to make an impression even if it’s with a Facebook post or comment.
The game has changed and so has the equipment used to play. Get rid of your old gear pay the price to understand the language of millennials and digital natives and when you do not know, google it.
Commit to a daily routine to grow your mind.
That’s G.Y.M for today and I trust that you are charged up and obsessed with a burning desire to succeed. Ordinary is a misnomer for you.
Plan, Act and Pursue your dream.
