Life is a Market – The Sequel

Some have mastered the art of speculation in life such that they now manipulate the perceived value of the quality of their lives. For perception they say is stronger than reality, our world has learnt to sell snow to snow men. People buy what they do not need to impress people they do not like. What are you buying? Everyone buys, whether for consumption or resale. For we speak not of consumption of cucumber and lettuce, nor of the eating of beef and drinking of wine but of the exchange of time for values.

Time is money, what you exchange your time for is an indication of what you consider valuable. There are values for sale, values of integrity, discipline, hard work, honesty, truthfulness, righteousness, faithfulness, self-control, the list is endless. In the market of life the denomination of exchange for these values is time, the possession of these values eventually delivers wealth to you. But we endlessly see men pursue the accumulation of money only to then try to buy these values when they no longer have time.

Example, the student who refuses the hard work and discipline of reading now in an attempt to pass an examination gets money to give a bribe because he or she no longer has time but needs the produce of what that value could have delivered.

The misdirection of speculation in the market of life is that the populace have driven up the perceived market price of worthless values. So the economics seem good, demand is rising and so is price. The demand for corruption, stealing, looseness’, laziness is further entrenched as the market seems to pay good dividends for the perceived market value. People buy only to realize all was but speculation, the intrinsic value of these habits formulated over time is worthless.

To be successful, learn to identify the fundamental value derived from the things we spend our time cultivating. Like a balanced meal over time helps build your body and immune system so also you build wealth by the values your cultivate over time.

We said earlier that everyone buys, so let’s look at those who buy to resell. The wise trader buys low to sell high. Speculation is the purchase of an asset (a commodity, goods, or real estate) with the hope that it will become more valuable at a future date. So time will reveal if what we have spent our time buying is of value or completely worthless.

What have you been doing with your time? You are constantly speculating whether consciously or unconsciously but for a truly profitable life you will have to spend your time on values with the highest intrinsic or fundamental price.

There is a divide, a gap you can call it between the intrinsic value of an asset and the perceived value of that asset. There is the story of the poor wise man who saved a city but his wisdom was despised because he was poor. Wisdom has high intrinsic value, however in this scenario the perceived value is next to nothing.
If you must profit in life you must learn to cover the delta between your intrinsic and perceived value. You must learn to first cultivate habits of high fundamental value and then develop the skill of raising its perceived value.

Fundamental value has to be seen for its perceived value to appreciate. You are hardworking, you are a person of integrity, you are disciplined, you are highly intelligent but nobody knows it because you are not visible. To profit from values cultivated you have to be visible, volunteer! Never sit in a room, not volunteer and let another do a job you are better qualified to do.

In covering the delta between how you are currently perceived and what your fundamental value is you must engage the laws of marketing. In their book the 22 immutable laws of marketing Al Ries and Jack Trout talk about the law of category. Given that it’s very hard to gain leadership in a category where competition already exists, it’s better to create a product in new category than trying to attack existing categories. Be original, establish your category. This does not necessary mean doing something entirely new, it might simply be you including your mannerisms, values, humor and personality into something that already exists.

Understand that when you come into your own, your market will emerge. There are people waiting for you to put your life, skills, intellect on display. In fact they are willing to pay in advance. The question is are you willing to take your market?
